The Pink Flamingo Society of Jekyll Island first appeared in the fiction novel, Christmas on Jekyll – Book Five in the Gem of the Golden Isles series, which was released on Black Friday in 2025.
The author, Jekyll resident Sandy Malone, had accepted a challenge to write a pink flamingo into her book as an apex predator. That predator took the form of a drunk 85-year-old neighbor, wearing a flamingo costume, who stole a neighbor’s Snoopy yard inflatable after too much pink punch at a meeting of a secret pink flamingo group on the island.
A month after the book came out, Sandy and her girlfriends, Rozell Hunt, Claire Moody, and Laura Dyer, went to see a musical together in Jacksonville. On the drive back, they
started talking about the book, and how much fun it would be if a Pink Flamingo Society actually existed on Jekyll Island.
Bonded together by a love of doing good works for the community, Sandy, Roz, Claire, and Laura began planning what their new organization could do to help worthy causes.
The Pink Flamingo Society of Jekyll Island, Inc. was formed in April 2026 and registered as a non-profit, 501c3 organization. Their first official fundraising event is scheduled for Aug. 27 th – Flamingo Bingo to benefit the library program at Burroughs-Molette Elementary School in Brunswick.
